Familiar Stranger

About Familiar Stranger

Some people know your name. Your birthday. Your most favorite color. Where you grew up.

But they don’t know your story.

Familiar Stranger is a collection of reflections on abandonment, grief, resilience, and healing—on everything that happens in the space between losing someone and facing them again.

This is not a place to place a blame.

It’s a place for truth.

And this is a picture of what it’s like to grow up with unanswered questions. To navigate the scars left by absence. Or making peace with the person you needed with the person who returned, or didn’t.

I write about trauma and acceptance using personal stories, journal entries, and hard-won lessons. About boundaries and finding yourself. About a life of making peace with a past that never asked you for permission.

Some of these stories are very painful.

Some are hopeful.

All of them are honest.

If you’ve ever felt forgotten, left behind, unseen–if you’ve had to heal from wounds you didn’t create–I hope you find something here that reminds you: you are not alone.

This is my story.

Or the parts I’m finally learning to tell, at least.

Welcome to the Familiar Stranger

Because sometimes the people who know our names know the least about our lives.

Love, Phoenix Vale
